Indoor banana - Care

Lighting. A banana needs a lot of light to grow. A well-lit window sill of the south, south-east or east window would be a good place for him. Lack of light affects the likelihood of fruit ripening; it is better to use additional lighting near the northern window.

On the balcony, the plant must be shaded from direct sunlight with a gauze curtain, and also protected from drafts.

Temperature. This tropical herb also loves warmth. Banana growth slows down if the temperature drops below 16 ° C. In summer, the optimum temperature for keeping is in the range of 23-26 ° С.

Air humidity. High humidity is the third component of successful banana cultivation in an apartment. Spray your pet more often (at least 1 time a day), place a container with wet expanded clay next to it. In winter, it is enough to spray once a week.

Watering. A fruiting banana needs plenty of water, but make sure that the soil in the pot does not sour. The top layer of the soil should dry out 1-2 cm before the next watering. You can use tap water, it is better hot, it is less chlorinated. Before watering, the water must be allowed to stand for at least a day and heated to 25-30˚С. Gently loosen the soil periodically with a blunt stick to aerate the root system. In winter, the plant is watered more moderately.

The second time the banana is watered only when the soil in the pot dries out to a depth of 1-2 cm. For this, after a couple of days, the soil surface in the pot is checked by squeezing a clod of earth with three fingers. If it crumbles, then water again abundantly. If not, then you cannot water, because frequent watering leads to acidification of the soil and rotting of the banana roots.

Top dressing. Banana grows very quickly and requires regular feeding during the growing season. It is better to prepare the fertilizer yourself and not use chemicals that can burn the root system. Feeding frequency: in summer - once a week, in winter - once a month.

Alternate feeding with humus (biohumus), ash, green manure. Feed immediately after watering.

To prepare humus fertilizer, 200 g of cow (not pork or chicken!) Humus is diluted in 1 liter of boiling water, insisted for 24 hours before feeding. Ashes are diluted in the proportion: 1 tablespoon per 1 liter of water. Green manure: chop the grass or weed and pour boiling water over, leave for 24 hours. Proportion: 1 tbsp. spoon for 1 liter of water.

Transfer and landing. Banana requires slightly acidic or neutral soil. Prepare it as follows: remove the top layer of soil (about 5 cm) under deciduous trees. Suitable: linden, acacia, walnut. Land under a poplar, chestnut or oak tree will not work. Stir a bucket of earth with 0.5 liters of ash or ash, 1 liter of humus (biohumus) and 2 liters of coarse river sand. Pour boiling water over the mixture to get rid of insects.

Depending on the size of the banana seedling, you need to choose the right pot. For small seedlings (10-20 cm), take a pot with a capacity of 1-2 liters, for older ones (60-70 cm) - with a capacity of 10-15 liters. At the bottom, lay a drainage made of expanded clay or broken red brick (in a layer of 3-7 cm) and sprinkle with sand. Carefully so as not to damage the roots of the plant, transfer it to the pot and cover it with the prepared potting mix. Make sure that the seedling is planted 1-2 cm deeper than in the old pot, it will grow additional roots in the future and give a greater yield.

Important: Do not transplant your banana directly into a large pot to avoid root rot. Allow air to flow through the bottom drain holes by placing the pot in the pan on a stand.

If the plant is provided with optimal conditions, the transplant will have to be done more than once a year, because a banana can grow very quickly.

Trimming and shaping. Banana does not need pruning.

Flowering and fruiting: When the banana is sufficiently developed, has grown 15-18 large leaves, it is time for flowering. In the outlet, a red-violet bud blooms, which, as it blooms, gradually sinks to the soil. The duration of flowering is different: from 3 months to a year. The bunch of fruits ripens from top to bottom, i.e. the upper fruits are more ripe. They taste different from purchased ones, as they ripen on the plant. Store bananas are picked unripe and ripen in containers during transport.

Reproduction. Banana can be propagated by babies (side suckers) and seeds. The children are separated in the spring and immediately planted in the ground, which is prepared in the same way as for transplantation. The seeds are germinated in warm water for a couple of days and sown. Seedlings appear in about 3-4 months.

Diseases and pests. A banana in room conditions is almost not sick if it is not placed in a draft. Nevertheless, it is recommended to sprinkle tobacco dust on the soil once every two months.

Indoor banana in winter. Reduce watering to avoid root rot. Provide moisture and keep away from cold.

Useful properties of bananas: The fruits of this wonderful herb are rich in vitamins and minerals. They contain serotonin and tryptophan, which can improve mood. Banana cultivation volumes are impressive: they are in fourth place after corn, rice and wheat.
