Watering indoor plants

Watering is a must in caring for indoor plants.

Regular watering promotes good growth and abundant flowering. This article explains the general rules for watering indoor plants.

On the frequency of watering, the quality and temperature of irrigation water, the peculiarities of watering some plants.

Signs of a lack of moisture. If the plant does not have enough moisture in the substrate, it begins to use it from its reserves. Plants with a bulb, tuber, rhizome, thick stem or leaves tolerate a lack of moisture for several months. If the plant has thin stems and flexible leaves, then they are susceptible to drought.

During a period of moisture deficiency, plant cells lose their elasticity and tissues hang. This is the main symptom that corrects after good watering. Prolonged wilting weakens the plant and disrupts the normal developmental rhythm.

The first signs for watering. The pot becomes light, the substrate moves away from the walls, becomes dry to the touch. For a more specific definition, you can use the test. A bamboo stick is stuck into the substrate to the very bottom and pulled out after a minute. If soil remains on it or spots have appeared, then it is too early to water.

Irrigation water. It is better to use rainwater for watering. To improve the quality of tap water, you can add the juice of half a lemon, per 10 liters. The settling of water during the day promotes the removal of active chlorine.
This water is suitable for watering almost all plants, with the exception of azaleas, gardenia and orchids. These plants should be sure to acidify the irrigation water (10 drops of vinegar per 1 liter of water).

Watering frequency. The need for a plant in water depends on its species, ambient temperature and humidity, consecration, properties of the substrate. At a temperature of 20 ° C, watered 3-4 times a month. If the temperature is above 24 ° C, water it every 5-7 days. During the dormant period, plants are watered no more than once every 7-10 days. At 15 ° C, watered once every 15-20 days.

Irrigation water temperature. You can not water with cold water, it causes stress on the plant. The best option is room temperature.
Plants with velvety, transparent leaves (caladium, cactus, azalea, saintpaulia) should not be exposed to rain. Plants with large leaves (ficus, croton, monstera) have a positive attitude towards light rain. The temperature at this time should be at least 15 ° С, without strong winds.

Watering rules. Plants do not immediately start consuming water after watering. She must first saturate the substrate, after which the roots absorb moisture from it. When completely dry, the peat substrate is very poorly saturated with water, so this should not be allowed. This can be corrected by lowering the pot in water and allowing it to completely saturate with water (about 30 minutes). It is best to water the plants less frequently but abundantly.

Watering by lowering the pot into the water. This method is used for plants that cannot wet the leaves, for forming rosettes, for tuberous and with lush foliage. The pot is immersed in water for 20-30 minutes. After that, for 15 minutes, allow the water to drain and put it in a permanent place.

Water in the pan. You cannot leave water in the pan, since the substrate will be wet all the time and the roots will quickly die. Water should be poured out 30 minutes after watering.

Watering orchids. For irrigation, only boiled water is used, since it does not contain mineral salts. It is recommended to add special fertilizer for orchids. In the process of watering, water is not allowed on the flowers.
To soften the water, it is recommended to use a special lime neutralizer, since city tap water has a pH of 8.

Cacti and succulents. Water every 10 days during the period of active growth and no more than once every 20 days during rest. At low temperatures, watering is canceled.

Watering citrus fruits. During the growth period, watered abundantly and rarely. Between waterings, the substrate should dry out to a depth of 2-3 cm. It is recommended to use rainwater or add softening components. After every third watering, fertilizing with liquid fertilizers is carried out.

Watering tree plants. At 18-22 ° C, watering is carried out every seven days. In the resting phase every 15 days. Water over the surface of the substrate.

Herbaceous plants. During the growth period, watering is carried out once or twice a week, during the rest period, once every seven to ten days. Watering method: immersing the pot in water.

Watering bromeliads (pineapple, ehmeya, gusmania). Water once every seven days, throughout life.
