Ficus rubber

Ficus rubber or Ficus elastica (lat.Ficus elastica) is a genus of plants of the Mulberry family. The place of origin of Ficus rubber-bearing is the tropical forests of northern and eastern India.

In nature, ficus reaches 30 m in height.

Ficus - popular species:

  • Ficus benjamina - Ficus benjamina
  • Ficus tiny (dwarf) Ficus pumila
  • Ficus Alli - Ficus Alli
  • Ficus lyre - Ficus Lyrata
  • Ficus carica (fig, fig tree) - Ficus carica

Ficus rubber - Care

Lighting. Loves sunlight, but cannot stand direct rays. The rubbery ficus can adapt to partial shade, but this will slow down its growth.

Temperature. In spring and summer, the optimal temperature for ficus is 20-25 ° C (not higher than 30 ° C), in winter - not lower than 15 ° C.

Hypothermia must be avoided.

Air humidity. In dry summer, as well as in winter, when the central heating is on, you need to regularly spray the ficus, once every two weeks, wipe the leaves with a damp swab or sponge. It is recommended to give the plant a warm shower every month.

Watering. Watering is moderate. The topsoil should dry out. In summer you need to water 1-2 times a week, in winter - no more than once a week.

Top dressing. Ficus is fed from April to September once every two weeks with diluted liquid fertilizers.

Transfer. Best produced in spring or early summer. A transplant is necessary if the soil is depleted and water quickly passes through the substrate, if the plant has outgrown the size of its pot.

Usually, a transplant is done every 2-3 years. Ficus needs good drainage.

Trimming and shaping. During the growing season, the ficus grows quickly, a new leaf appears about once a week. Ficus can add 0.5 to 1 meter in height per year.

In room conditions, to limit growth, the top is cut off at a height of 1.5 meters. After the lateral shoots have grown (after about 2 years), they are also cut off, forming the crown of the plant.

The milky juice that is released during pruning must be wiped off.

Reproduction. Cuttings and stem pieces left over after pruning can be used for propagation. To do this, they are washed with warm water to wash off the milky juice and dried for about an hour.

For the formation of roots, cuttings and pieces of the stem are placed in a dark container with water or immediately planted in a substrate. The substrate can be prepared from a mixture of sand and peat.

After 3-4 weeks, the cuttings will have roots and new leaves. Such cuttings can be transplanted into small containers for further development.

Plants in winter. Move variegated ficuses closer to the sun.

Do not overcool or overmoisten the plant.

This is interesting: Ficus secretes biologically active substances that improve the air and is a natural filter.
