Juncus - Care

Junkus will perfectly fit into the interior of the room with an extravagant, extraordinary design style. It may well serve as a replacement for a statue or other large decorative element. Will create outlandish accents in the office, rooms of a residential building, greenhouse.

Thanks to bends and lines, it visually expands the room, it can also be used to horizontally divide the room into separate zones. It is best suited for creating a comfortable environment near the pool, in the bathroom, on the summer playground.

Despite the fact that the flower is non-standard, caring for it is not too difficult, the main thing is to create an appropriate environment: sufficient humidity, light and a comfortable temperature regime.

Lighting. Loves bright diffused light. It is recommended to place it near the southern and western windows, but if there is a lack of sunlight, it can be artificially illuminated. The plant is capable of thriving even under fully artificial light. Some varieties are accustomed to partial shade, for ease of placement deep into the room, this must be specified when purchasing.

Temperature. A thermophilic plant, the most acceptable temperature for Juncus is +25 ° C, it will easily adapt to hotter air, the main thing is that the temperature in the room does not drop below + 16 ° C.

With the arrival of winter, you should not lower the temperature in the room, this can provoke the beginning of a dormant period, which means that the plant will stop growing, the shoots will dry out and lose their decorative appearance. This is applicable only for old plants, for them every year they arrange a dormant period for a short time - two weeks, on the eve of spring. There is no need for young plants to rest.

It is important to protect the flower from drafts; if you wish, you can transfer the flowerpot with the flower to the glazed balcony for the summer.

Air humidity. A swamp plant needs very high humidity, for this, be sure to regularly spray the stems, from a short distance, with water at room temperature.

It is best to place a decorative fountain, humidifier, or aquarium nearby.

Watering. The main rule in caring for this moisture-loving plant is to water it as often as possible. For active growth and development, it is necessary that there is always water in the flowerpot, rising slightly above the drainage layer. An excellent option would be special pots with automatic watering. A hydroponic growing method is ideal,

Do not allow the substrate to dry out, this is detrimental to the flower.

Top dressing. From spring to autumn, they are fed with universal fertilizers, which are intended for decorative deciduous plants twice a month.

Transfer. The transplant is carried out once a year. They remove the old soil, examine the roots, cut off the spoiled stems. A thick expanded clay drainage layer is installed at the bottom of the flowerpot. The soil is selected loose, acidic, choose a ready-made mixture for paludariums or aquatic plants in a flower shop. Be sure to mulch the substrate with decorative stones or expanded clay, this prevents moisture loss.

Also transplanted as needed, for example, when the pot becomes too tight. A junkus transplant does not harm at all.

Trimming and shaping. It does not need special training. But in order for the plant to always look elegant and neat, it is recommended to cut off the dried stems in a timely manner.

Bloom. Flowers of light brown color, sometimes greenish tint, collected in inflorescences.

Reproduction. In home cultivation, a vegetative propagation method is used. In the process of transplanting, the overgrown bushes are divided into parts, in each division there should be at least 10 shoots and a bunch of roots.

Diseases and pests. Despite its very wayward appearance, the flower is resistant to pests and diseases. In the case of a spider mite, aphid or scale insect, it is enough to treat the plant stems with a fungicidal agent.

If the leaves turn yellow and begin to dry out, this indicates a low air temperature, then the plant begins a dormant period. Also, the leaves can wither if the root system decays. When the root system decays, transplanting into a flowerpot with a new substrate will help.

Juncus in winter. It tolerates winter well in an apartment, subject to the proper temperature regime not lower than + 16 ° C, maintaining humidity and watering.

Interesting Facts. Juncus is known in folk medicine, it is used to treat kidney and urolithiasis.

Since ancient times, baskets have been woven from the shoots of plants, hence its name (lat.) Júncus, jungere - to tie, weave.
