Codiaeum (lat.Codiaeum) is a genus of plants of the Euphorbiaceae family. Croton is a native of Southeast Asia. In nature, it grows up to 3 m in height. The name of the plant comes from the Greek (kodeia) - "head".
In indoor conditions, the codiaum grows up to 1 m in height. The color of the leaves is very diverse: yellow, green, orange, red with veins. A young plant can have several colors.
It blooms in summer with small white flowers, this rarely happens at home. The spectacular plant is prized by flower growers for the amazing beauty of the leaves. Croton with its presence decorates any interior, while taking up not much space.
Plant names: Croton, Codiaum, Home traffic light.
Purchase and selection of plants. Croton is chosen for the attractiveness of the foliage. A healthy plant should have developed, not withered, lower leaves. During transportation, it is important that the codiaum does not freeze.

An evergreen, variegated shrub is suitable for growing in light, warm, spacious halls, and also perfectly decorates a winter garden or greenhouse with its elegant look.
The unusually beautiful leaves of croton become more attractive with age, beautiful orange patterns appear on young green leaves. Thanks to its amazing color, the decorative shrub resembles a fabulous autumn forest.
The configuration of the leaves is also striking in its magnificence and variety: with wavy edges, wide, narrow, ribbon-like, finger-like, pointed, three-lobed. The dense foliage of the codiaum will develop well, grow symmetrically, if you periodically turn the flower pot and do not forget about timely watering. By cutting and plucking, you can form a gorgeous crown.
A luxurious flower loves moderate watering, moist air and a lot of light. It reacts poorly to watering with cold water, drafts, sudden jumps in air temperature.
Lighting. Croton is a light-loving houseplant. In order for the croton leaves not to lose their paint, it must be placed under a bright diffused light. The most suitable place is near the western and eastern windows. If the codiaum is in direct sunlight, the leaves can get burned, in the shade the leaves lose their color.
Try to hide the plant from direct rays during the peak of solar activity.
Temperature. Croton needs a warm habitat. In spring and summer, a suitable temperature is around 20-25 ° C. When warm days come, the croton can be taken out to the balcony. In winter, the temperature should not fall below 15-17 ° C, since in a too cold room, the roots of the flower can rot. Also protect the plant from drafts and cold air.
Air humidity. For croton, air humidity is of great importance. On hot days and in winter, when the batteries are on, the plant must be constantly sprayed. To increase the humidity, Croton can be placed on an inverted saucer, placed in a larger pan of wet expanded clay. It is also useful to wipe the leaves with a damp sponge.
Watering. Water with well-settled, soft water at room temperature. In the spring and summer, croton needs abundant watering. Overdrying the soil can cause Croton to shed its leaves. In between waterings, the soil should dry out a little. In winter, the frequency of watering is reduced. In the summer, arrange a warm shower for the flower, make sure that the water does not drain into the pot. This should be done no more than 1 time per month.
The water that the glass is in the pan must be drained to prevent decay of the root system.
Top dressing. Croton is fed from spring to autumn every 2 weeks with complex fertilizer for indoor plants. Since September, feeding is stopped.
Transfer. A young plant (up to 3 years old) is transplanted every year, an adult - once every 2-3 years. For transplantation, a substrate is prepared from sod, leafy soil, peat and sand in a ratio of 1: 1: 1: 0.5. A store-bought potted potting medium is also suitable. The transplant is carried out in a not too spacious pot, at the bottom it is necessary to put drainage from expanded clay or broken red brick, this will allow excess liquid to flow freely outward.
Croton must be transplanted carefully so as not to harm the root system. After a successful procedure, the plant needs to be watered well.
Trimming and shaping. Croton tolerates pruning quite well. In order for the plant to start branching, pinch the crown in the spring. Pruning shoots can be used for propagation.
Bloom. Mature plants can bloom in inflorescences with small flowers. Croton blooms usually in summer.
Nondescript flowers do not provide decorative value; they cannot be compared with the riot of colors of Croton foliage, which charms with its originality.
Reproduction. The codiaum is propagated in the spring by grafting. For cuttings, take the semi-freshened tops of the shoots. The milky sap that is released on the cut must be washed off before planting. The substrate is a mixture of peat and sand. For better root formation, the bottom of the cutting is treated with root (heteroauxin).
The temperature must be maintained around 24-26 ° C. To maintain moisture, the cuttings are covered with a jar or placed in a transparent bag. After a month and a half, when the cuttings take root, they are transplanted into small pots. The transplant substrate is the same as that used for young plants.
Diseases and pests. Codiaum can get sick when kept in too dry air, insufficient watering, hypothermia. Brown leaves indicate increased dryness of the air or soil. In low light, the leaves lose their bright color. Croton can drop foliage due to cold, move the plant to a warm, well-lit place.
Damaged by spider mites, scabbard. If you find a scabbard, wipe the leaves with a damp cloth soaked in a mild soapy solution. If the damage is too severe, use special products. Spider mites are easily removed with an insecticidal preparation.
If the plant has lost its elegant appearance, it does not look very healthy, although you followed all the rules for caring for a capricious pet, try rearranging it to a new place. It is likely that the croton is not comfortable where you put it.
Plants in winter. Croton is sensitive to temperature changes and drafts. The main thing is not to dry out croton in winter and not to get cold. The temperature should not fall below 16-18 ° C in order to prevent the leaves from curling.
Watering is slightly reduced. Spray regularly when the batteries are on. It is advisable to wipe the leaves from dust with a damp sponge.
Interesting Facts. Croton secretes poisonous juice, so it should not be placed in children's rooms, and also make sure that pets do not nibble the leaves. Protect your skin when working with a flower - wear gloves.
Oil is prepared from flower seeds, which is used for the preparation of cosmetics. In medicine, it is used to treat coughs, colds, dysentery and inflammatory processes of the digestive tract.
Milky juice, which is contained in the leaves and stems of croton-codiaum, has an amazing property, thanks to which the plant heals itself, heals its wounds and injuries.
