Jasmine

Jasmine (Latin Jasmínum) is an evergreen curly or erect shrub of the Olive family. The homeland of jasmine is the subtropics of Europe and Southeast Asia. Under natural conditions, jasmine grows in the Caucasus and Crimea. There are about 190 species of this fragrant plant.

Jasmine white is the national flower of Pakistan, and jasmine sambac is the national flower of Indonesia and the Philippines. In Indonesian wedding ceremonies, jasmine is the most important flower.

Two types of garden plants are grown in Europe:

  • White jasmine or Jasmine real (Jasminum officinale) is a shrub 1.5 m high with feathery leaves and fragrant white flowers;
  • Jasmine yellow (Jasminum fruticans) is a short shrub, about 1 m tall, with yellow flowers, grows on the southern coast of Crimea.

Indoor plant lovers who do not have a garden area can easily grow jasmine in an apartment. Indoor jasmine is a vine that curls along a support and blooms with fragrant flowers all summer.

Indoor jasmine - popular varieties:

Jasmine large-flowered (Jasminum grandiflorum), another name Jasmine officinalis (Jasminum officinale) is the most popular type in indoor floriculture. Evergreen vine with long shoots and small leaves. Adult plants bloom from spring to autumn with large white flowers with a pleasant aroma. It is these flowers that are added to green tea during the industrial cultivation of this variety of jasmine.

Jasmine polyanthum (Jasminum polyanthum) - the name of the variety speaks for itself. It blooms in spring with many fragrant flowers, their aroma is stronger than that of other varieties. This jasmine is also different in that the color of the buds turns from pink to white when the liana is fully blooming.

Jasminum nudiflorum (Jasminum nudiflorum) is a shrub characterized by the fact that for the winter part of the foliage falls off and bright yellow flowers bloom. Flowering lasts all winter until April.

Jasmine Sambac (Jasminum sambac), other names: Jasmine Arabic or Jasmine Indian. Large white double flowers of this variety can bloom at any time of the year, by the end of flowering they acquire a reddish tint. The main flowering time is from March to September. The flowers are very fragrant, but they do not last long on jasmine, about a day. By the way, they are used in the tea industry, like medicinal jasmine flowers.

Jasmine primrose (Jasminum primulinum) or Japanese Jasmine (Japanese Jasmine) - yellow large flowers of this plant are odorless, but have an unusual shape, similar to primrose (primrose). Blooms in spring and summer.

Jasmine Stephanotis profusely flowering (Stephanotis floribunda), another name: Madagascar jasmine is a climbing liana with large snow-white fragrant flowers. This type of stephanotis is very popular in indoor floriculture. Stephanotis juice is quite caustic and can irritate eyes and skin, so it is best to keep it away from small children.

Indoor Jasmine - Care

Lighting. Jasmine is photophilous and the best place to place it would be the sill of the east or southeast window. On the southern windows, the vine needs to be shaded in the summer noon hours; placement on the northern window can affect flowering.

Temperature. Indoor jasmine is not too demanding on the temperature regime. In spring and summer, room temperature is suitable for him, in winter for the plant to rest - 12-16 ° C.

Air humidity. Jasmine is more demanding for air humidity. Indoors with dry air and on hot days, jasmine should be sprayed regularly. Make sure that no water gets on the flowers of the plant.

Watering. In the spring-summer period, jasmine is watered abundantly, with warm, settled water. This vine does not like lime in the soil, so the water can be slightly acidified with lemon juice. In winter, watering is reduced, no more than 1-2 times a week, so that the plant is prepared for flowering.

Top dressing. From spring to autumn, every two weeks, jasmine is fed, alternating organic and mineral fertilizers. In autumn, fertilizers are applied once a month, and in winter, feeding is stopped.

Transfer. It is recommended to replant young plants annually in spring, adults (from 3 years old) - 1 time in 2-3 years. The soil for transplanting needs loose and slightly acidic: 1 part leaf, 1 part clay-sod land, 1 part peat and 1 part sand. You can use purchased soil in proportions: 1 tsp soil for azaleas (or roses), 3 tsp soil for flowering plants with the addition of 1 tsp sand and a little vermiculite. It is advisable to put a small layer of expanded clay drainage at the bottom of the pot.

Trimming and shaping. Usually, jasmine is formed in the form of a liana, which braids semicircular supports fixed in a pot with a plant. For more active growth, the tops of young shoots are pinched, and long lashes are cut off to a third of the length. Pruning is best done in the spring, before active growth begins. Some varieties of jasmine, sambacu, for example, are pruned 3 times a year.

Bloom. Jasmine is so fragrant that during flowering it is better to put it on the balcony or in the kitchen. Most indoor jasmines bloom with small white flowers all summer. Some varieties have large flowers, up to 3 cm in diameter, or have a golden yellow color. For better flowering, liana needs a rest period in winter.

Reproduction. Jasmine is usually propagated in two ways: cuttings and air layers.

With air layers: Fill a small pot with soil, which is being prepared, as for transplanting, and place it near the mother plant. Make a small cut in the lower stem of an adult plant and press the cut to the ground in a small pot with a hairpin. Water the cuttings regularly. When young shoots appear in a small pot, cut off the cut from the mother plant.

Cuttings: From an adult plant, cut off cuttings 12-15 cm long with 4-6 leaves. Put them in water or a mixture (sand and leafy earth) for a month and a half. For better rooting, use heteroauxin or root. When the cuttings have roots and small leaves, transplant them into small pots with soil, which is prepared in the same way as for transplanting.

Diseases and pests. Usually attacked by red spider mites, aphids and whiteflies on the underside of leaves.

Plants in winter. To help your jasmine bloom better, it is recommended that he arrange a short winter. At this time, the flower is kept in a bright cool (12-16 ° C) room, watering is reduced to 1-2 times a week.

Interesting Facts. In 2011, there were calls on the Chinese internet to go out every Sunday with jasmine flowers to protest government censorship. In turn, the country's leaders banned the sale of jasmine.

Useful properties of jasmine. The scent of the flowers relieves stress and reduces aggression. Jasmine ionizes indoor air.

Jasmine flower tea is a recognized aphrodisiac that stimulates sexual activity in women.
