Indoor Hovea (Howea) is a large-format plant grown in tubs. It belongs to the palm species, the Arecaceae family. The second name is Kentia. Cultivation is carried out for decorative purposes, and varieties with spreading leaves resembling blades are of particular value. They are located along the trunk.
The palm tree has one drawback - it grows too slowly. It is quite possible to achieve more active development. It is necessary to create almost ideal conditions, similar to natural ones. About 2 leaves appear per year. Adults Hovei are more decorative. They are suitable for decorating: halls, spacious living rooms, greenhouses, libraries and the like.
In indoor plants, it will bloom very rarely, and the peduncles resemble the cobs that cover the small white flowers.
Beneficial features. The palm tree has a beneficial effect on the surrounding atmosphere, the ecology of the room in which it will be installed.
The plant contributes to:
There is no allergy to Hovei, and sound absorption occurs due to the massive leaves.
It is very easy to care for such a palm tree. It is necessary: competent maintenance of the optimal temperature, prevention of drafts, moistening the soil and feeding with useful substances. Thus, it is possible to create ideal conditions in which the plant will grow, develop and bloom. It is worth remembering that winter and summer care is significantly different.
Lighting. This culture is considered shade-tolerant, however, in order to ensure normal growth, high-quality lighting is necessary. A sign of light deficiency is a minimum of foliage in an adult plant. There should be about 9-12 of them. Direct contact with UV rays is strictly prohibited. They will cause burns. When placing the pot on the window, turn it once a week for uniform light saturation.
Temperature. If the room temperature is too low, the roots of the plant begin to die off. The optimal indicator is not less than + 20C. Increasing this value will lead to drying, folding of the leaves. If you underestimate, on the contrary, the leaves will begin to become covered with small dots that resemble mold.
Air humidity. When kept at the optimum air temperature, humidification is not required.
It is necessary if:
Acceptable rate is 30-70%.
Watering. The substrate is moistened regularly, in moderation. It is forbidden to allow moisture to stagnate, which will prevent the presence of drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. When, during watering, a lot of water is formed on the saucer, it is removed without fail. Before watering, the water should be defended for 2 days.
Top dressing. For normal growth of a palm tree and getting beautiful foliage, it is regularly fed:
Fertilizer should be applied during watering, no more than 2 times per month, exactly in the period from March to February.
Transfer. Hovea has a powerful root system, and therefore, spacious tubs with a drainage hole are used for transplanting. With each subsequent transplant, choose a vessel with a diameter 3-4 cm larger than the previous pot. As for the soil mixture, an excellent option is loose, ideally air-permeable. It is better to use a specialized substrate designed for palm trees. When preparing the soil yourself, you need to take sod land, peat, coarse sand. The first two components are taken in equal amounts, and the last half is less.
Pruning. Gradually, the old foliage will dry out. Those leaves that have completely dried up must be removed by pruning with a garden pruner. They also remove shoots that:
damaged by pests;
covered with defects due to improper care.
Leaving them can cause plant disease.
Bloom. Hovea blooms only if she has enough light and space. A long peduncle grows on a palm tree, gradually branching out at the tip. Buds in the form of small lime thickenings on the shoots. Flowers can be of different sexes, but they will be in the same inflorescence. You do not need to acquire a second plant for pollination.
Reproduction. By nature, this palm reproduces in two ways.
1. Seeds. This option can be used if the culture grows in natural conditions or in a specially equipped greenhouse. The room environment is not suitable for this, since it is possible to achieve abundant flowering with obtaining seeds only in 2% out of 30.
2. Shoots. To do this, in an adult plant, with a planned transplant, it is necessary to isolate a number of lateral processes. They are planted in a loose substrate of peat and sand. It is important to create an optimal microclimate with an air temperature of + 25C, regular watering, spraying. The air is constantly ventilated, excluding drafts.
Diseases and pests. Any plant, even the most wear-resistant plant, can be attacked by pests and various diseases.
1. The appearance of brown spots on the tips of the foliage. The reason is contact with direct sunlight, watering with hard water.
2. The foliage is completely brown. The reason is the excessive boron content in the top dressing. The solution is to transplant the plant with thorough rinsing of the roots.
3. Formation of blackheads and rotting at the base. The reason is abundant watering, the presence of stagnant moisture in the soil.
4. Stopping growth. The reason is the onset of a dormant period, a lack of light.
5. Chlorosis of young foliage. The reason is the wrong fertilizer.
6. Chlorosis of the lower leaves. The reason is the illiterate maintenance of the temperature regime, mainly low.
7. Yellowing of foliage. The reason is excessive lighting.
8. Bronze stains on foliage. The reason is potassium deficiency. It is required to select another mineral complex.
9. Straw-colored spots. The reason is contact with UV rays.
10. Formation of darkening on the leaves. The reason is that a complete replacement of the soil is required, the choice of a higher-quality complex fertilizer with a minimum content of fluorine and superphosphate.
11. Desiccation of the tips of young leaves. The reason is the lack of moisture in the substrate.
Plants in winter. When keeping the plant at room temperature in winter, additional illumination is required, for which you can use a fluorescent or LED lamp. In winter, when the room becomes 2-3 degrees cool, the culture slows down growth, which will be restored with the onset of warmth.
Interesting Facts. Experienced flower growers use this variety of palm trees for landscaping. Hovea can act as a natural filter as it can:
Kentia can maintain the maximum positive energy in the house. It calms the atmosphere, attuning household members to kind-heartedness, gives a charge of cheerfulness, charges with optimism, not letting them lose heart even in the most difficult situations.
